V.I.P. Model Agencies finds that a typical traded company stands a 6 percent chance of being bought in any year. The probability increases by seven percentage points if the company's stock price has recently suffered a sizable decline, so long as the decline wasn't triggered by something that makes a takeover less likely, according to a working paper by Alex Edmans and Itay Goldstein, of Wharton, and Wei Jiang, of Columbia University.
